इन दिनों हिन्दी के दो लोकप्रिय जासूसी उपन्यास- लेखकों की अंग्रेजी में बड़ी चर्चा है। पहला नाम है इब्ने सफी। आजादी के बाद के आरंभिक दशकों में कर्नल विनोद जैसे जासूसों के माध्यम से हत्या और डकैती की एक से एक रहस्यमयी गुत्थियां सुलझानेवाले इस लेखक के उपन्यास का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद प्रसिद्ध प्रकाशक रैंडम हाउस ने छापा है। खबर है कि हाउस ऑफ फियर नामक इस अनुवाद को जिस तरह से पाठकों ने हाथोहाथ लिया है कि प्रकाशक उनके अन्य उपन्यासों के अनुवाद छापने की योजना बना रहे हैं। इब्ने सफी मूल रूप से उर्दू में लिखते थे। प्रकाशक हार्पर कॉलिंस ने जासूसी दुनिया तथा इमरान सीरीज़ के उनके 15 उपन्यासों का उर्दू से हिन्दी अनुवाद प्रकाशित किया है।
दूसरे लेखक हैं सुरेन्द्र मोहन पाठक। बंगलोर के एक सॉफ्टवेयर इंजीनियर ने इनके एक उपन्यास का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद किया। पाठकों की प्रतिक्रिया इतनी उत्साहर्द्धक रही कि जल्दी ही उनकी दूसरी पुस्तक का अनुवाद भी छपकर आ गया। पिछले साल एक और खबर ने ध्यान खींचा था जिसका संबंध जासूसी उपन्यासों से था। फिल्म फेस्टिवल आयोजित करनेवाली संस्था ओसियान ने मुंबई में हिन्दी के जासूसी उपन्यासों के करीब 150 कवर्स की प्रदर्शनी लगाई। संस्था के निदेशक का कहना था कि इन किताबों के कवर को लोकप्रिय कला के एक माध्यम के रूप में देखा जाना चाहिए। जिस साहित्य को हिंदी के पब्लिक स्फेयर में कभी घासलेटी साहित्य तो कभी लुगदी साहित्य की संज्ञा दी गई आज अंग्रेजी प्रकाशक- पाठक क्लासिक के रूप में देख रहे हैं। दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय, जे. एन.यू. के इतिहास विभागों में इनके ऊपर शोध किए जा रहे हैं, इनकी व्याप्ति का आकलन किया जा रहा है।
